San Antonio de Agua Caliente is famous for its backstrap loom weaving, in particular, double brocade weaving. Each woven piece is painstakingly woven a few threads at a time. A shuttle is rarely used. This is women's work. Foot loom weaving is men's work. The women us a very sharp piece of wood to guide each thread through the weft.
The woman in the photo above allowed me to try on the traditional costume, which consists of a long skirt, tight belt, over belt, blouse, head piece and shawl (held over the arm). I then posed with another women, from another village dressed slightly differently.
Yesterday afternoon we wandered down to the local Saturday market. It was a riot of colour and people. Lovely to see where people go to do their shopping. Everything looked delicious and fresh and ripe!
